For the past few weeks we've had some uninvited guests in our attic. I was getting ready one morning when I heard something scratching outside the window. I looked outside and didn't see anything. Then I realized it was coming from the ceiling. Ed and I couldn't figure out what it could be. A rat maybe? We were told that there were some sightings of rats in the area due to the clearing of some land just down the street. I prayed to God it wasn't that, because just the thought freaks me out! One day, one of our neighbors stopped by and as he rang the door bell, he said he saw a squirrel run across our roof. So I did a little research online, and sure enough there was a high probability that they found a way into our roof. Ed said he heard the noise again and told me that he was going to go up in the attic and investigate. Better him than me! I took my place outside to see if the little critter would come out, and sure enough just before he went up, I saw two squirrels peek out of the eaves. I screamed, of course. The kids were with me outside and they were cracking up... while I was freaking out. Even Enzo was laughing at me... LOL!
So Ed gets into Eagle Scout mode and tries to think of a way to capture them. I had read online that it was illegal to just go in there and shoot the darn things! I made phone calls to find out how to get rid of them, and these people were charging a couple of hundred bucks, which Ed thought was ridiculous. So today, I was sitting in my office and I get a phone call from Ed who was outside. He tells me to get him a garbage bag and says he thinks he's got one of the squirrels trapped! And what does he think he's gonna do with a garbage bag?... I'm wondering. As I try to throw the bag outside to him in order to avoid being attacked by an angry squirrel, he proceeds to tell me to come outside to help him. Ummmm... I don't think so! Meanwhile, the kids are again cracking up at me. Ed apparently has the squirrel trapped in a corner and wants me to stay on one side in case it tries to run the wrong direction. Like I'm really going to do that! He convinces me to come outside, but mind you I am quite a distance away. Ed finds an empty garbage can and sets it down on one side. Thank God it ran straight into the garbage can and Ed gets the lid on quickly. YES! Victory on Ed's face.. LOL!
I also read that once you trap them, you are supposed to release them in a wooded area a few miles away from your home. Well, we decided to take him more than a few miles... more like 10. As we are driving, the kids are watching Alvin and the Chipmunks on the DVD and we are making all kinds of jokes about having Alvin, Simon, and Theodore in our house.
We finally find a place to release the critter. Forgive me for the blurry pictures, as I was ready to RUN in case it came at me. But I just had to take pictures... LOL!
One squirrel down... one to go!
